Tips/Local life
The one hour ferry ride between St. Vincent and Bequia can be pretty rough. It may be helpful to check the tide information or ask around for the best times to travel.
Getting around the mainland of St. Vincent is cheaper by bus, and is easy as sticking out your arm; buses will stop if it is safe to do so. However the minibuses can be overcrowded, and travel at high rates of speed. When leaving the bus, have your change ready to hand to the driver.
Do not accept a ‘gift’ from someone who approaches you on the street or on the beach. You will get offered anything from bird feeders made out of coconut shells to necklaces, etc. If accepted, you will have a hard time returning the gift when money is demanded in exchange. A polite ‘no, thank you ’ and walking away as soon as you are approached will do.
Shop in the Marketplace for fruits and some arts and crafts. Bring along your negotiating and bargaining skills.
A resident of the island is called a Vincy.
Be on the lookout for the manchineel tree found along some of the beaches and noted for their bright green fruit. The fruit is poisonous, and the sap can cause severe blisters if you happen to stand under a tree while it is raining.
Be a tourist, but don't be a tourist. Be aware of your surroundings especially at night, or visiting unknown secluded areas without a tour guide.
Like many of the other islands, the island has been influenced by a British colonial history. Therefore conservative dress is in order particularly in the town.
Sailing around the islands is a fantastic way to visit, however the seas (particularly near Bequia and Mustique) can be a bit rough at times. You can charter a plane in advance from the mainland to either island.
Many stores, with very few exceptions, are closed on Sundays. The majority of banks are closed on Saturdays and Sundays though ATM access is always available.
Shop in the local supermarkets for locally made hairoun beer.
Do not expect well-defined or marked streets. Get a map or ask at your accommodation before heading on your tour.
Out of courtesy, always ask before photographing Vincys.
The island has a high number of visitors from mid-December to April. Visit during the 'off-season' for better rates on accommodation.
