Tips/Local life
Shop in local arts and craft stores and the marketplace in St. John&esquo;s for souvenir bargains
Getting around is cheaper by bus, and is easy as sticking out your arm; buses will stop if it is safe to do so. However look for authorised minibuses.
Shop in the Vendor’s Mall and Heritage Marketplace for fruits and some arts and crafts. Bring along your negotiating and bargaining skills.
Tipping is generally 10% - 15% depending on the level of service.
Be a tourist, but don't be a tourist. Be aware of your surroundings especially at night, and avoid walking into areas such as Grays Farm/Green Bay, the Point, Villa that have some elements of criminal activity.
Many stores, with very few exceptions, are closed on Sundays. The duty free area of Heritage Quay may be open on Sundays depending on the cruise ship schedule. The majority of banks are closed on Saturdays and Sundays though ATM access is always available.
Do not expect well-defined or marked streets. Get a map or ask at your accommodation before heading on your tour.
Out of courtesy, always ask before photographing Antiguan locals.
The island has a high number of visitors from mid-December to April. Visit during the 'off-season' for better rates on accommodation.
