 It is advisable that travellers purchase full travel insurance when travelling to the Caribbean, and ensure that the insurance is valid and up-to-date. The primary types of coverage offered by travel insurance policies are trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical. A policy for trip cancellation coverage means you will be reimbursed by the insurance company for any non-refundable payments made if you can no longer go on the trip as planned. The coverage may also cover bankruptcy of your airline, cruise line, or tour operator. Trip Interruption coverage will reimburse you for any financial losses due to an unplanned interruption or delay in your trip.
Medical coverage generally covers the cost of medical care and medical evacuation services if you need to leave your travel destination for treatment elsewhere. You should purchase your travel insurance policy as soon as you have made your final vacation plans.
Generally a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes medical coverage/evacuation and trip cancellation will cost between 4 and 7 percent of the cost of your trip.
Tips:Read the fine print in your policy and check exactly what will be covered. Some insurance policies typically have exemptions including any pre-existing medical conditions, or alcohol and drugs. If your insurer is not aware of any pre-existing medical conditions, the policy may not be valid.
Bring along your policy number and the 24-hour emergency number with you on your trip.
You may already have some coverage for certain types of insurance on existing policies. For example you may find out from your current insurance company whether your existing health policy covers you while you are travelling, and whether it covers payments in your travel destination or you will need to pay out of pocket and then be reimbursed later.
